The Maroles:

The Marolles or Marollen is a popular historic neighbourhood of Brussels, situated between the Palace of Justice and Brussels-South railway station. Lying at the heart of Marolles are the Chapel Church and the Place du Jeu de Balle. Major arteries of the district include Rue Haute, Rue Blaes and Rue des Tanneurs. Its inhabitants are called Marolliens.

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium:

• a prestigious collection of 20,000 works of art : the Museums’ collections trace the history of the visual arts – painting, sculpture and drawing – from the 15th to the 21st centuries. They preserve the works of the Flemish Primitives, of Pieter Bruegel, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacques Jordaens, Jacques Louis David, Auguste Rodin, James Ensor, Paul Gauguin, Ferdinand Khnopff, Henry Moore, Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, Marcel Broodthaers, Jan Fabre and many others.

• This jewel among Belgium's cultural institutions is comprised of 6 entities: 

  • the Musée Old Masters Museum, 

  • the Musée Modern Museum, 

  • the Musée Wiertz Museum, 

  • the Musée Meunier Museum, 

  • the Musée Magritte Museum and

  • the new Musée Fin-de-Siècle Museum.

• De Belgische kunstenaar Thomas Lerooy (°1981) staat bekend als beeldhouwer en tekenaar. In het raadselachtige werk van Lerooy lijken verschillende  realiteiten door elkaar te lopen, elk met hun eigen wetmatigheden. 

• De toeschouwer tuimelt van de ene beeldtaal in de andere, doorheen verschillende gelaagdheden, waarbij dood en eeuwigheid elkaar ontmoeten. Hetzelfde geldt voor thema’s als schoon- en lelijkheid, orde en chaos, show en intimiteit, drama en humor.  

• Lerooy heeft een hoogstpersoonlijke stijl ontwikkeld: een mix van realisme, surrealistisch aandoende thema’s en invloeden uit de klassieke beeldhouwkunst. Zijn schilderijen ziet hij als levende creaturen; ze hebben tijd nodig om te rijpen zowel op vlak van beeldtaal als inhoudelijk. Je hoeft ze niet te begrijpen, maar vooral te voelen door je over te geven aan de zachtheid van zijn penseelvoering. 

• Samen met zijn sculpturen vormen zijn schilderijen een complex oeuvre dat tegelijk ontroert en beroert, choqueert en beklijft.
